Nothing says beautiful, formal bridal portrait, like Edmonton’s Legislature Building as your backdrop. It’s a busy, busy place on any given  Saturday afternoon in the summer, but if you are patient, you can take advantage of those classic columns in your photos :)

Winter wedding photos inside an old rail station - photo by Night and Day Photography

Winter wedding photos inside an old rail station - photo by Night and Day Photography

When planning a winter wedding, it’s important to take photos outside if you can, but equally important is having an indoor location so your wedding party doesn’t freeze in their formal wear out in the sub zero temperatures.  lol  There are great places everywhere for photos.  These photos were taken inside an old train station, and the employees there were all too happy to oblige this bride’s request to take photos there.  In general, people will do almost anything for a girl in a wedding dress if she asks!  So when you are thinking about taking indoor photos, don’t exclude your favourite restaurant (get permission in advance), or that old building you have seen in passing.  Remember if you are thinking about taking advantage of an office building or mall, you will need to have wavers signed in advance though.

Perfect Winter Wedding Bliss - photo by Night and Day Photography

Perfect Winter Wedding Bliss - photo by Night and Day Photography

Okay, we all know I love winter… but seriously, what could be more perfect that photos in the perfect undisturbed snow for your winter wedding.  Granted, I do recommend having an indoor location for photos as well, but by embracing the winter – you can get something so awesome.  This bride was actually warmer than her groom.  She had the big hooded cape, mittens with hand warmers in them, and big boots on under her dress.  Talk about prepared!

This photo was taken at the Hotel MacDonald – a great place for both indoor photos and outdoor photos.  The private garden allows for river valley views, and crowd control is usually not too much of a problem. It’s also easy to run in and out to warm up!

classic church photo

Classic Church Photo by Night and Day Photography

I love the classic black and white wedding photos with the couple in front of an old stone church that you see in family albums from years past.  That’s why I’m always delighted when brides and grooms pick these great old churches to get married in.  Usually, they have also picked a venue to take photos at – but – taking just a couple of minutes to take a photo in front of the church always turns out awesome!

This church is the beautiful St. Joachim church in central Edmonton.  I’ve always wanted to shoot a wedding here and I was NOT disappointed at all.   Not only is the outside fantastic, the priest was fun, the stained glass was awesome, it had lots of parking, and the roof…  the roof is spectacular from the inside.  I totally recommend it!   It’s a great Edmonton Venue for a ceremony – particularly if your looking for a catholic wedding.  Just don’t miss out on a photo outside the church before you take off after the ceremony.

Justin and Cheryl - Photography by Buffy Goodman

This is the pub where Cheryl and Justin first met, the very table they sat at that fateful night! Awww!

Revisiting a special place that holds meaning during your wedding photo session adds that special something – this is a photo with an awesome story you can tell your grandkids!

Cheryl and Justin didn’t have the time on their wedding day to make it to this pub for photos, but if you’re into this idea, just ask your wedding photographer if they offer “day after” sessions. Without the added scheduling pressures of the wedding day, your photographer and you can make some awesome memories come alive.

Edmonton Wedding Photo Locations

For Jamie & Trevor’s wedding party photos, we got lucky as the staff of The Strathcona Streetcar Barn opened those big green doors for us! What I’m still waiting for though, is the couple adventurous enough to actually take their wedding party on the historic trolley ride across the river! (streetcar rides are available May through September)
