Perfect Winter Wedding Bliss - photo by Night and Day Photography

Perfect Winter Wedding Bliss - photo by Night and Day Photography

Okay, we all know I love winter… but seriously, what could be more perfect that photos in the perfect undisturbed snow for your winter wedding.  Granted, I do recommend having an indoor location for photos as well, but by embracing the winter – you can get something so awesome.  This bride was actually warmer than her groom.  She had the big hooded cape, mittens with hand warmers in them, and big boots on under her dress.  Talk about prepared!

This photo was taken at the Hotel MacDonald – a great place for both indoor photos and outdoor photos.  The private garden allows for river valley views, and crowd control is usually not too much of a problem. It’s also easy to run in and out to warm up!

Sunset - Picture That Photography

Sunset - Picture That Photography

Sunsets usually happen while the reception is in full swing on most wedding days.  If you have a neat location, step outside with your photographer for five minutes to catch a great sunset photograph.  You’ll be so happy you did!

Looking for great hair and makeup done quickly that LASTS ALL DAY LONG??

Inside the Ricci Salon - photo by Night and Day Photography

I thought I would talk about something every bride wants to know about.  Their hair.  We’ve been to many salons  and seen many brides hair all day long.   I gotta say Ricci Salon is one of my favorites.  For starters, the lighting in there is beautiful for photos… but I digress.  Here’s why I recommend this salon to brides:

1. Honestly, every time I’ve seen them do makeup it takes 10-15 minutes rather than the usual 20-30 and it looks perfect.

2. The hair is amazing, relatively quick (some places take over a hour per person) and looks perfect ALL DAY LONG – from 8 AM to 12 AM.  This could have something to do with the fact that Tony Ricci has won countless awards, including Alberta Hair Stylist of the year many times over.  The stylist in the photo to the left, actually was leaving right after she did this bride’s hair to accept an award in Toronto for new stylists.

If you want to see how great this bride’s hair lasted all day – despite the wet wet snow that was falling all day. Take a look at the slide show of her wedding by clicking on her photo.  There are many places that do a fabulous job throughout the city, and downtown Edmonton Ricci Salon is just one of them.

classic church photo

Classic Church Photo by Night and Day Photography

I love the classic black and white wedding photos with the couple in front of an old stone church that you see in family albums from years past.  That’s why I’m always delighted when brides and grooms pick these great old churches to get married in.  Usually, they have also picked a venue to take photos at – but – taking just a couple of minutes to take a photo in front of the church always turns out awesome!

This church is the beautiful St. Joachim church in central Edmonton.  I’ve always wanted to shoot a wedding here and I was NOT disappointed at all.   Not only is the outside fantastic, the priest was fun, the stained glass was awesome, it had lots of parking, and the roof…  the roof is spectacular from the inside.  I totally recommend it!   It’s a great Edmonton Venue for a ceremony – particularly if your looking for a catholic wedding.  Just don’t miss out on a photo outside the church before you take off after the ceremony.

Why get full day coverage of your wedding??

Wedding dress waiting to be worn - photo by Night and Day Photography

Wedding dress waiting to be worn - photo by Night and Day Photography

Wedding photo coverage seems to be all over the map, but my preference is to spend the entire day with each bride and groom.  One of the big reasons is the wedding day is just that – a whole day.   In some cultures it is even longer – but I digress…  I like to go early in the morning and get photos of everyone hanging out, as well as some dramatic shots of the dress, shoes, and other accessories.     After picking each member of your bridal party, it is nice to have photos hanging out together.  AND after spending months picking out each detail – it’s only right there should be a photo to remember it by.   If I simply show up at the ceremony – I miss all these photos, and let’s face it, there is no other opportunity to take photos like this as the day goes on.  If I were to leave after the formals, then there would be no photos of the first dance, friends hanging out together, family spending time together and of course, no same-day slide show of the days photos.   So, while it makes for a very long day of shooting and carting around gear – I believe it is worth it.  So whatever photographer you choose, consider the full day coverage package.

Don’t forget to have fun on your wedding – every minute doesn’t need to be accounted for.  When Katy & Jon found out that Orange Julius was giving away free smoothies for one day only, their wedding day, they scheduled a trip to Southgate.

You will look your most beautiful on your wedding day – your hair and makeup will be done, and you’ll be wearing the perfect dress. But don’t be afraid to get down on the ground, the most amazing photographs can sometimes be taken of you sitting in the grass together. The hem of your dress may not be perfectly clean at the end of the night, but your day will be no less beautiful.

Edmonton Weddings - Rose Ceremony. Photograph by Stephanie Cragg

A lovely element seen at todays weddings, is the rose ceremony.
If your officiant asks if you would like to have one of these, be sure to
inquire into which one they were going to incorporate into your nuptuals.
The ceremony can vary from the bride & groom presenting roses to each other,
to the couple giving the roses to the parents, to the officiant noting which
sentiment is attached to each different colour of rose.

The Edmonton Public School Archives/MacKay Avenue School is a beautiful building for any ceremony with an classic old-fashioned feel.

Wonderful light flows into every room, I love this shot of Anita just moments before the ceremony.
