Remote Lighting for Studio Feel - Trident Photography

Remote Lighting for Studio Feel - Trident Photography

Add a little colour to your day. Just because you are in a bedroom doesn’t mean you can’t get that studio feel. A couple of remote lights can turn drab to fab when looking at your photos.

Jasper Wedding

Monday, June 14th, 2010

If you were thinking of getting married in the mountains, then Jasper may be the place to do it. I was at a wedding in Pyramid Lake, which is just right outside of Jasper and I was awestruck by the location on Pyramid Island. There is an outdoor space where you can have the ceremony that has a beautiful backdrop of the mountains and the lake. I’m not going to post a photo, since it was completely overcast and raining when I was there, but trust me this place looks amazing.

Hold Still!

Long exposure - Trident Photography

During a recent engagement session I had the couple hold still for me on the corner while I shot a slow shutter speed to allow the cars in the background to leave light trails. This one turned out really neat with the front and rear lights leaving a tiny gap right at their heads.

Fort Edmonton provides a really great location for shooting formals. There are so many places to go to make really great images. The old buildings, the carousel, and the train to name but a few. I am looking forward to the next shoot there.

Adding Depth with Reflections - Trident Photography

Adding Depth with Reflections - Trident Photography

No, I am not talking about taking a look back upon your life here. I am talking about the phenomenon of light reflecting off a glossy surface, and how to best use that to your benefit. In this image, I used the reflection to include subjects in the photo that would otherwise be impossible. It gives a unique and interesting look.

I love a clear sunny day, but what do you do when it is overcast and grey? Make the light more dramatic! That is exactly what I did in this image of Kyle and Nassira when we shot their formals.

Making an Image vs Taking a Picture

The Silk Purse

The Silk Purse - image by Trident Photography

What separates the real photographers from the guys who bought a nice camera? The ability to create an image. I am not merely talking about taking a nice picture, anyone can do that when the conditions are right. I am talking about “turning a sows ear into a silk purse” so to speak. This is about creativity in composition, location, and lighting. Here is an example of a shot I made in the tiny bathroom at the hotel.

Pre wedding photography can be used for many things, the guest book, a nice informal portrait to hang on your wall, or even your personalized invitations. Many photographers will even credit your engagement session toward the wedding if you just want to test drive a photographer before booking the wedding with them.

Wedding Cake Alternative

Truffle Cake - image by Trident Photography

I was shooting a wedding recently, and what really caught my eye was the fabulous cake they had. Well, I use the term cake lightly, because while the very top piece was cake (for cutting) the rest was actually truffles on a stick. The guests were invited to come and pull out a 24kt gold leaf covered truffle to enjoy. Since the colors of the wedding were also brown and gold, this cake really fit the bill.
